Brad and Angelina Love to Homeschool

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, with the help of tutors, are choosing to homeschool their six children Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. They have been heavily criticized in the past for pulling their children out of school in order to travel the globe, but when asked in an interview with The Independent about her decision to homeschool, Jolie said, “I do think we live in a different age, and the education system hasn’t caught up with our children and our way of life.” Jolie believes the education system in the United States is poor and therefore believes the world is a better place for education than the classroom. She would rather let the kids go to a museum or learn to play an instrument than sit in a classroom for the majority of the day. Because of this, they have chosen to enroll the six kids in the Lycee programme, a French education system that is taught by specialist teachers and present in multiple cities around the world.

The couple has fun teaching their kids at home and recreating experiences they enjoyed in school. Pitt told USA Weekend that “Angie and I do everything we can to carve out some semblance of normalcy for them, to re-create the kinds of moments that were special for us. It’s not unusual for the kids to be covered in paint. We have mud fights. It’s chaos from morning until the lights go out, and sometimes after that.” According to Brad and Angelina, modern schools can’t meet the needs of their kids. Modern schools are stuck in the past, and they would rather their children find a book they love then spend all day doing schoolwork. Jolie says that the kids still do their work, but she is the first to encourage them to finish so they can go have some fun.

Due to the couple’s constant need to travel around the world on film sets, their children need a flexible school environment. At 7 years old, Pitt and Jolie’s oldest son Maddox had already attended schools in New York City, New Orleans, Prague, and Los Angeles. Now, the Pitt-Jolie children are enrolled in an international program. Homeschooling allows them to keep the same curriculum and a more stable lifestyle, no matter where the family is geographically.

Homeschooling has become a trend with many other A-list stars. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, John Travolta and Kelly Preston have also chosen to teach their kids at home. All claim the ability to cater to their individual child’s teaching style as the main reason. A one-size-fits-all education just won’t cut it for these big stars anymore.

Homeschooling is a challenge, but it can have outstanding rewards for yourself. At the same time, it can be reat for your child. Just be sure to take it very seriously and try to make an effort to separate your roll as an everyday parent with your roll as a home school teacher.
