Graduation Ceremony For Homeschooler

Thirteen years of hard work and studying is traditionally commended with a graduation ceremony, witnessed by dear friends and family. Just because a student is taught at home does not mean that he or she is not equally deserving of the same kind of celebration. Every family teaches their student in a unique and individual way, so a homeschooled child’s graduation ceremony should be just as unique.

Homeschool groups will often put on their own graduation ceremony every year that is modeled after the ceremonies in public and private schools. If interested in this type of group environment, then check with your city or state’s home school organizations for details. You can also choose to plan a more private ceremony. This can consist of a renting out a venue and inviting lots of friends, but with your student as the only graduate. This can also be a short ceremony in your own home. Your graduate should pick what he or she is most comfortable with. A ceremony is not for everyone though. Some graduates prefer just to throw a party and be in community with their supporters. Once again, this can be an intimate group or a large party. Either way, a homeschooler’s completion of their education program should be met with much celebration.

In a public or private high school, a graduate must share the day with hundreds of other students in the same place. The ceremony is generally impersonal and your child must wait for that brief moment where he or she can walk across the stage. Homeschool organization graduations are smaller, but still provide the group environment where students can celebrate what they have accomplished together. Or individual graduations can be made more personal, with details about a child’s particular accomplishments and character. With more freedom in the ceremony, family and mentors can speak personal words of encouragement to the graduate. Many families display their child’s portfolio and artwork since they have usually not participated in the years of school fairs and shows. It is encouraging to see how a child has progressed over the years, so this is a great way to celebrate years of improvement. A photo presentation or video showing as well can document special memories and hard work in your child’s education.

After you have chosen the type of celebration that is right for your family, now it is time to plan the logistics. Don’t forget about the special details like making special invitations. Decorations and special cakes make a homeschool graduate feel special like any other graduate. Completing a homeschool education is just as impressive—if not more so because it requires more motivation and independence—as completing a public school program, so try not to leave out the special details of a traditional graduation. The beauty of a homeschool education is the freedom to choose the best option for each student, so celebrate this special achievement in the way that is best for your individual graduate.

Homeschooling is a challenge, but it can have outstanding rewards for yourself. At the same time, it can be reat for your child. Just be sure to take it very seriously and try to make an effort to separate your roll as an everyday parent with your roll as a home school teacher.
