Homeschooling in
the State of California

Important things to know as you consider homeschooling in the sunshine state.

The homeschooling process in the state of California is often seen as one of the most lenient, which could be attributed to the different California lifestyle where many are found pursuing a career as an actor/actress. There are a total of four different routes an individual can go in terms of homeschooling but the standard compulsory attendance law still stands, stating that individuals between the ages of 6 to 18 must attend school at least 175 days a year. The subjects that must be taught during these years are English, math, social sciences, fine arts, health, and physical education. However, during grades 9-12 students must do the listed above plus a foreign language, applied arts, vocational, and optional drivers E.D. which is strongly recommended.

There are a total of four options that a parent or guardian must choose in terms of doing homeschooling, the first being that the home may be used as a school, but the instructor must speak English, must teach similar subjects to that of public schools, and also must keep track of attendance. This differs from the second one that allows the homeschool process to function like a satellite program, which means that they receive their curriculum from a private school, but teach it at home. Another option is actually bringing in an individual who is not a parent or guardian, but rather a certified tutor. The tutor may be allowed to teach the student, only if his or her credentials are valid and up to date. The last possible option that can be utilized for homeschooling is an independent study program, in which the student does a public school curriculum in their own home.

The state of California does not have any requirements for standardized testing, and furthermore requires little to no collaboration with the superintendent of the county. Contrary to the little supervision and requirements for testing, the state does however make it mandatory that a record be kept of the grades starting from grade 1-12. Since there is little supervision over the entire process of homeschooling, it may be in the best interest of your homeschooling program to work with various organizations such as Christian Home Educators Association of California or Family Protection Ministries, as both of these organizations are well-known and established organizations within the homeschooling community. Getting support from state support groups can provide great advice and resources. It can also provide supplemental activities and educational opportunities to make your homeschooling experience better. You can also build your network with other homeschoolers and parents by becoming a member of California Home School Network. They protect the right of the family to educate its children from the regulations. Since California is such a huge state with many families, the numbers of homeschoolers are vast and therefore there are many organizations and groups for homeschool families. With a variety of homeschooling organizations, it makes homeschooling in California easy and fun.
