Homeschooling in
the State of Oregon

Important things to know as you consider homeschooling in The Beaver State.

The state of Oregon mandates that students must attend school between the ages of 7 and 18 years for students who have not completed the twelfth grade. Oregon law does not have set requirements for either number of days of instruction or required subjects, but in other states the standard amount of days is usually 180. Oregon also openly allows for children to be exempt from public school as long as they are being educated at home by a parent or legal guardian.

The requirements for a homeschooling parent or legal guardian are as follows. The parent or guardian is expected to notify the education service district in writing, explaining the intention to teach a student at home. This notification is a onetime process, and is therefore not expected to be completed annually. A new letter of intent must be sent to the education service district if the parent and child relocate to another service district. A homeschooling parent can then create their own curriculum and choose coursework at their own discretion.

Though the Oregon state laws for homeschooling are relatively loose, homeschooling is still a very difficult task. Homeschooling parents and students would benefit greatly from support groups and associations in the Oregon area. The Oregon Home Education Network (www.ohen.org ) is a very valuable resource to homeschooling parents across the state. It is a nonprofit organization that provides homeschoolers with a network of families, conferences, workshops, phone help lines and holds events such as prom for homeschooled students. Other support groups also exist on a more regional basis. These regional groups include: Jackson County Home Educators, Greater Portland Homeschoolers, and the Veneta Home Education Network.
