Homeschooling in
the State of Texas

Texas law requires that children must attend school from the age of at least six years of age until the time the child reaches their 18th birthday. Unlike other states, Texas law does not provide as strict of guidelines for what is acceptable and what is not acceptable for the homeschool curriculum. The only set requirements are days of instruction, 180, and the subjects of good citizenship, math, reading, spelling and grammar. Though these guidelines are scant, it is important to include social studies, sciences, geography, music, art and physical education to provide a homeschooled student with a complete and well-rounded curriculum. Following available school curriculums, or at the very least, referencing them will assist in providing a comprehensive education that allows for college readiness.

Texas state law is one of the most loose with homeschooling; a parent can begin homeschooling if they meet the general education requirements. According to state law, “homeschool do not have to initiate contact with a school district, submit to home visits, have curriculum approved or have any specific teacher certification.” In the state of Texas, homeschools are the legal equivalent of private institutions.

Homeschooling is not a job that should be taken on alone; there are many ways to obtain support. Doing research to find state support groups can allow access to a range of engaging activities and lesson plans to use with your child. Texas has a plethora of organization ready and willing to provide resources, and other help for homeschooling. The Family Educators Alliance of South Texas (www.homeschoolfeast.com) has orientations, newsletter, workshops, books and training seminars available to homeschoolers. The North Texas Home Educators network provides education conferences twice a year, in addition to graduation and commencement exercise, college preparation training sessions, and other family and support group leadership workshops, newsletters, and training events. There are many other networks, associations and organizations available to homeschooling parents. Do research to find the right organization.
