Homeschooling in
the State of Illinois

The state of Washington and its view on homeschooling are nothing short of being known as a staple as well as the prime example of how homeschooling within a state should be viewed, organized, and ran. As with all states that provide the right to homeschooling, the compulsory attendance requirement still stands, as all children ages 6 to 16 must attend school, and furthermore the homeschooling that a child goes through is considered equivalent to public school enrollment. Since it is comparative, there are higher standards of certification that must be fulfilled by the parent or legal guardian. The parent or guardian must qualify in one of the four ways:

• The student is supervised by a certified teacher
• The parent or guardian has earned 45 college level quarter credit hours
• Parent has completed a parent qualifying course in home based instruction
• Parent has been deemed qualified by the superintendent of the district

These strict yet arguably essential guidelines for teaching students is relatively rare for most homeschooling states, therefore making homeschooling within the state of Washington seem much more organized, reliable, and overall a better standard of homeschooling. These qualifications of the parents are not the only thing that the state of Washington takes seriously about their homeschooling, as it is actually required to take at least one assessment of the students progress annually whether they are a standardized achievement test or an assessment that deems the student is progressing by a certified individual in the field of education. The assessment is a general test based on many various types of fields, but the various fields that are required to be taught are science, mathematics, language, social studies, history, health, reading, writing and spelling, and the development of an appreciation of art and music. Washington state has a comparatively organized system of homeschooling progress, in which sense it is required by the instructor or parent to keep copies of annual test scores or written assessments as well as immunization records. This is all used to help provide tangible proof for students who are graduating. Students graduating in a homeschooling program may also be awarded with a diploma by the home schooling parent or guardian. This is not the only option, as students may want to continue their education in a public or private school, therefore parents are strongly recommended that they contact the school staff or board of education to figure out the certain requirements that must be completed in regards to their transcript and diploma situation. However, in any case, the Washington Homeschool Organization hosts their annual homeschool graduation, which is a delightful event allowing students of all homeschooling situations to come into one area to collaboratively celebrate their success.
