Technologies That Can Aid in Homeschooling

The Internet is a major resource for homeschooling that has revolutionized the way that pupils learn. It is also a valuable tool that connects parents through social media, where they can swap advice and chat about lessons learned. Homeschooled students are actually scoring higher on ACTs and SATs than their peers in traditional schools. Some studies suggest that they may even be more suited for college. This is all increasing because of the greater use of technology. Homeschoolers are given more freedom and told to research answers for themselves as if they were in the “real world.” They also have access through the Internet to a wide breadth of online lectures, lessons, and shows. Parents do not need to worry about teaching lessons they do not understand themselves because online lecturers can teach it instead. Students can take virtual trips to other countries or through museums. They can practice their writing skills by starting a blog or participating in online discussion groups.

The Internet is not the only technology useful for homeschooling though. Kids are naturally drawn to interactive, electronic gadgets. Apple’s iPad can be seen everywhere as a kid magnet with its interactive touch screen and exciting games. Applications on the device and similar digital readers range from silly hand eye coordination tests to educational fact databases. Students can even use the technology to read their favorite books or study from their e-textbooks at a lower price.

Digital cameras are a good way to get a student involved on a project. When taking a field trip to the science museum, have the student document the trip and create a project using the photographs. There are numerous projects that can be thought up through the perspective of a camera lens. Picture editing software and presentation preparation will encourage creativity as well. A video camera can bring another hands-on approach to learning. Recorded skits and videos for research projects once again bring creativity into learning. And who knows? Maybe your child will discover a life long passion and career choice.

The popular Wii video game console is often used for exercise and yoga. When it’s too cold to play outside in the winter or if there’s no backyard to play in, kids can still fit a PE class into their homeschool experience. Just because learning takes place at home does not mean that it has to take place on a smaller scale. At home projectors are another way to bring lessons to the big screen.

Technology has allowed families to homeschool when they could never have done so before. With cheaper, faster, easier access to educational resources, more and more families are choosing to teach from home. Preparing homeschoolers for future success, technology has helped students to get involved in the process of learning and creating.

Homeschooling is a challenge, but it can have outstanding rewards for yourself. At the same time, it can be reat for your child. Just be sure to take it very seriously and try to make an effort to separate your roll as an everyday parent with your roll as a home school teacher.
